What is the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

According to the Urban Dictionary, a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, or more often termed MPDG, is a phrase used to describe a
"bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures."
This phrase is one that has been coined by many film critics in an effort of categorizing the outgoing, quircky females that toe the line between curated cookiness and lunacy.fi

When to be the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

Why not be the smart and sexy, perfectly imperfect version of yourself that is magnetic and all at once unattainable. Who doesn't want to be a slightly broken object of desire while all at once oozing whimsical fairy vibes?

Where be the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

Be the Manic Pixie Dream Girl at your local coffee house, taking small sips of a lavender honey cold brew as you pick the blueberries off of a muffin, carful not to forget to blast the Twilight: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in your favorite pair of over the ear headphones.
Be the Manic Pixie Dream Girl at the grocery store, drag that lonely boy who only sees the world in black and white film through the isles as you twirl and get him to smile at your terrible puns.

Who is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl or Guy?

There are many examples of the troupe throughout literature and cinema, the most notable examples being:

As seen above, the troupe of MPDG does not solely apply to women in cinema, with the turn of the century Manic Pixie Dream guys have too been on the rise. The Manic Pixie dream gal or guy exist on a spectrum of manicness as it were, with their manicness correlating directly with their perceived attractiveness.

Figure 1. As seen above, the 1:1 ratio that exists between the aforementioned qualities of the very rare and quirky MPDG.

Why be the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

Life is measured in a million different ways, and this can be affected by ones culture, heritage, mindset, trauma and even socioeconomic factors. Be that as it may there are two constants in this life, all of us must consume in order to survive, and in the end we must all die. Famous American Memoirist Maya Angelou once said that,
"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

How right she was to say this, in the end she published several autobiographies, poetry books and was a renowned Civil Rights activist. Who better than her with infinite wisdom to tell you to live your best life, not to worry about the ever-expanding cosmos or even the time you may have left. Life is about living, so make it worth living! It is time to romance every aspect of our lives, just as the poets did long before us. Time to sip on your espresso slowly as you watch the clouds drift by, take notice of the people around you how try to do that same. Because as Suzanne Collins put beautifully in her novel Catching Fire,

"Our lives are not measured in years, but are measured in the lives of people we touch around us."

How to be the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

Live, live for yourself, live to be the you that you want to, ought to, chose to be. Life is messy, life is full of roadblocks and people who will always attempt to cut you down... but thats life. Until they find a a better name for it, live as your most authentic self. If you don't know who that is, that's okay too, we have our whole lives to figure that out.

With love,

Little Lady Blossom
